Montgomery County Workforce Investment Board
The Montgomery County Workforce Investment Board's mission
is to ensure that the County's workforce is well-prepared,
educated, trained, and adaptable, with the tools and resources
to meet the current and future needs of local businesses
and successfully compete in a global economy. The business-driven
board of 30 members seeks to strengthen the County's workforce
system and create job opportunities by encouraging partnerships
between business, government, and community-based organizations.
The board also advises the County on the expenditure of
over $3 million in federal, state, and county funds-primarily
from the Workforce Investment Act to implement MontgomeryWorks,
the one-stop workforce development system. The board's policy
oversight and guidance for these expenditures foster collaboration
among local businesses and the public and private sectors
in meeting the County's workforce development needs.
A County Executive Order established the board in 2002 to
administer the federal Workforce Investment Act and strengthen
public-private involvement in carrying out the Act's programs
and services. A copy of that order can be viewed here.
The County Executive appoints all board members, including:
- 16 representatives of a cross-section of local employers
- Three representatives of community-based organizations
- Two representatives of labor organizations
- One member nominated by each of the following County
entities: Montgomery County Public Schools, Montgomery
College, a four-year college or university, the County
Department of Economic Development, the County Housing
Opportunities Commission, the County Department of Health
and Human Services, the Maryland Job Service, and the
agency administering Title V of the Older Americans Act.
